Orthopedic and Neurological Physical Therapy
A large number of our patients are recovering from orthopedic injuries such as muscle strains, broken bones, and knee, hip, and shoulder injuries or surgeries. Our staff members instruct them in pain control and work on flexibility, building strength, and using proper body mechanics. We also treat patients who have had neurological problems — those recovering from strokes, brain injuries, or spinal cord injuries. Our therapists teach them how to perform daily activities, such as walking, using stairs, and getting in and out of vehicles. We work on improving balance, strength, and flexibility to help them re-educate their muscles to regain as much control and function as possible.
Occupational Health Work Conditioning
Through our Work Conditioning Program, those who have had injuries on the job receive rehabilitation aimed at helping prepare them to resume safe, productive employment. Therapists first conduct a functional capacity evaluation (FCE) to evaluate a person's abilities that relate to work performance. Then they simulate the job demands of the work and help the patient build tolerance to the work, monitoring him/her carefully throughout. An important part of work conditioning is education on how to perform the job safely and how to prevent further injury.
Our Staff
All of our staff members are licensed physical therapists or licensed physical therapist assistants. All have had experience and are highly qualified. We also have exercise physiologists on our staff, and the hospital wellness programs are a service we offer. Many physicians work regularly with our department, since staff members plan therapy based on physician orders, then update doctors on their patients' progress.

Q: |
If I think my child needs pediatric physical therapy, what do I do? |

A: |
First, see your pediatrician or family physician. He/she must refer your child for physical therapy by writing a prescription. You should then call us at (740) 393-9670 to register with us and set up your child's first appointment. You will need to bring the prescription with you to the initial appointment. |

Q: |
What do we need for the first appointment? |

A: |
In addition to the physician's prescription, please bring your insurance card(s) and copies of previous tests your child has had (e.g. x-rays, MRI, etc.). These may provide important information for our therapists in evaluating and treating him or her. Your child should wear comfortable clothing and shoes to the appointment. |

Q: |
What will the therapist do? |

A: |
Initially, the therapist will evaluate your child. We encourage you to stay with your child for this evaluation. The therapist will determine your child's strengths and weaknesses and establish appropriate goals and a treatment plan for him or her. The treatment will be aimed at addressing the identified weaknesses as needed to achieve your child's goals. A wide variety of treatment activities are available. Although your child's therapist will be working to accomplish specific therapy goals, the therapist will also try to make the activities fun and enjoyable, as much as possible. Our therapists enjoy working with children and are specially trained in meeting their unique needs.
Treatment activities may include the following:

Q: |
How will insurance and billing be handled? |

A: |
Although we will attempt to contact your insurer to pre-certify your physical therapy treatment, it is your responsibility to be knowledgeable regarding your particular insurance coverage and to notify your therapist of any specific stipulations that apply to physical therapy. Please verify your physical therapy coverage with your payor (your insurance company, Medicare, Medicaid, etc.) before your first physical therapy appointment.
Most types of insurance provide some coverage for physical therapy. Some cover only a certain number of treatments, and some do not cover certain procedures. Most provide coverage for only a percentage of the total cost of services. Knox Community Hospital accepts most major private insurance plans, Medicare, Medicaid, and Workers' Compensation.
