The Board of The Foundation for Knox Community Hospital announced their 2008 fundraising campaign to purchase a digital mammography for Knox Community Hospital at a cost of $360,000. The Foundation for Knox Community Hospital decided on the theme “Keep Her in the Picture” to emphasis the importance of women’s health in our society. Women give life and support to our community; they are proud and they are strong. They are the hope for our future. However, many women do not get their annual mammograms. Cancer of the breast is the most commonly diagnosed non-skin cancer in women. One out of every eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death in women. In 2007, approximately 178,480 women in the United States will receive a diagnosis of invasive breast cancer. In addition, although male breast cancer is rare and accounts for less than 1 percent of all breast carcinomas in the United States, about 2,030 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in men this year. Approximately 40,460 women and 450 men are projected to die from breast cancer this year. The results of a two-year study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, propose that digital mammograms yield more accurate detections of breast cancer than
any other form of imagery available.
