Stress Testing
A stress test is done to determine if your heart muscle is getting the blood supply it needs. The stress test also helps find out how well your heart is working. Qualified staff and physician will perform the testing.
Why do I need a Stress Test?
Your doctor orders this test to obtain more accurate information on how your heart is working. Your heart receives life-giving blood from vessels called coronary arteries. If these vessels become partially blocked or narrowed by the build up of fatty materials (lipids), your heart may not receive the blood it needs to function properly. This narrowing of coronary arteries is called coronary artery disease. Even if your heart functions normally at rest, your heart muscle may not receive enough blood under stress such as when you are exercising.
Are there different types of Stress Tests?
The type of stress test you have depends on your symptoms, age, risk factors, exercise capacity and physician preference. There are also stress tests that involve injection medication through your veins if you are unable to walk on a treadmill. The different kinds of stress tests are:
More information is available for each by clicking on the name of the test.
What will happen?
Several small pads called electrodes will be placed on your chest. These pads will be connected to an electrocardiograph (ECG) monitor so your heart rhythm and rate can be watched closely throughout the test.
How should I prepare for the stress test?
Your doctor should be able to provide information to you about preparing for the stress test. Be sure to wear loose, comfortable clothing and walking shoes. Pharmacologic or medicine induced stress tests require fasting for 6-8 hours prior to testing. Be sure to bring a list of medications with you to the hospital. Do not take any beta blocker medications for 24 hours prior to testing. (Consult your physician). An IV may or may not be started prior to your test. Expect to be at the hospital for 3-4 hours. Do not eat or drink products with caffeine. No smoking.
