Holter Monitoring

What is a Holter monitor?
A Holter monitor is a small device that is attached to your chest with small pads called electrodes. This device records your heart's activity for the time that it is in place. It can be easily worn on your neck, shoulder or belt.

Why do I need this?
Your doctor might order a Holter monitor if you've experienced palpitations, shortness of breath, dizziness, chest pain, irregular pulse, passing out, medication changes or if you've had a pacemaker inserted.

How does it work?
Wear loose clothing, preferably a button shirt. You cannot shower while wearing the monitor. Do not remove it to take a shower. Bring a list of your medications with you to the hospital. The monitor must be returned to the hospital in 1 to 2 days after removal. You can maintain your normal daily activities while wearing the monitor, unless restricted by your doctor.
