from the Marcia Wallace Lecture. | SPIRIT OF HOPE CELEBRITY LECTURE
On October 25, 2007, The Foundation for Knox Community Hospital hosted it's first Spirit of Hope Celebrity Lecture featuring Marcia Wallace. This event netted $24,000 for The Foundation.
Marcia Wallace, a breast cancer suvivor and one of America's most beloved comic actresses was the keynote speaker. Ms. Wallace is best known for her Emmy award winning role as Bart's teacher, Mrs. Krabappel, on The Simpsons, and as Carol Kestor on The Bob Newhart Show. She reprised that role when she guest starred as MURPHY BROWN's 66th secretary, for which she received an Emmy nomination.
Marcia was honored by the Roswell Park Cancer Institute for helping educate Americans about the importance of early cancer detection and inspiring others through her 20 years as a breast cancer survivor. The Gilda Radner Courage Award, named for the late comedienne, recognizes a cancer patient whose public battle has given hope to cancer patients and has focused public attention on cancer. Marcia successfully battled breast cancer in 1985 but lost her loving husband, Dennis Hawley, to pancreatic cancer in 1992. She frequently lectures on the emotional and clinical tribulations of fighting cancer, promoting early detection and low-cost mammography. She spoke on the importance of humor and laughter when facing life's challenges. |
