Dobutamine Stress Echo
This is a stress test designed for people who are unable to walk on a treadmill. A medicine called Dobutamine will be given through an IV (intravenous). Ultrasound pictures are taken of your heart at 2 to 3 minute intervals. Common side effects from the medication are headache, shakiness, pounding in chest, or throat and sometimes nausea. Side effects usually subside within 10 to 15 minutes after the medication is stopped.
- Expect to be at the hospital for approximately 2 to 2½ hours
- Nothing to eat or drink 4 hours prior to testing
- No caffeine 24 hours prior to testing
- No smoking
- Stop beta blockers 48 hours prior to testing
