Community Pediatrics - Knox County's Teen Screen Program SiteJoins in Supporting Children's Mental Health Awareness Day
May 8, 2007 Community Pediatrics, Knox County's Teen Screen Program, joins partner, the National Columbia University TeenScreen Program, in supporting National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day on May 8th. This important day will occur during National Children's Mental Health Awareness Week. May is also Mental Health Month.
National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day is a nationwide initiative to draw attention to children's and youth mental health issues. This year's theme, Thriving in the Community, focuses on the systemic changes needed to transform the mental health care system in America to one that more effectively supports youth and their families. This includes emphasis on school-based programs and the need to demystify and destigmatize youth mental illness.
Community Pediatrics, Knox County Teen Screen Program (a mental health check-up program), is working hard to educate the community about youth mental health as well as reduce stigma by offering voluntary and confidential screenings that assist with early identification and intervention. According to Dr. Bell and staff, "The truth is, catching mental illness early and before it impedes academic progress and social and family relationships, helps eliminate stigma and is vital to the future of our community's young people."
The Columbia University TeenScreen Program is a national mental health and suicide risk screening program for youth. Parent consent and teen assent are required for the free mental health check-ups. Currently, over 450 TeenScreen sites have been established in 43 states around the country, including Ohio. For more information on TeenScreen and its programs, visit www.teenscreen.org.
