Who Can Benefit From Cardiac Rehab?
As many as 13.5 million Americans have heart disease. Anyone who has endured a heart event such as angina, angioplasty, heart failure, coronary artery bypass surgery, or a balloon catheter procedure, and anyone who has a family history of heart disease or risk factors can benefit from a cardiac rehab program.

What is Cardiac Rehab?
Cardiac rehab can make a difference. It is a safe and effective way to help you feel better, get stronger, reduce stress, strengthen your heart and increase your vitality. In a cardiac rehab program you will learn the different components of an exercise program, how long and how frequently you should exercise, and the correct way to engage in exercise and physical activity. Most important, you will learn what you can do to be healthier. The three components of the cardiac rehab sessions include:

Exercise

The heart is a muscle, and exercise strengthens the heart muscle.

Matters of the Heart Education Classes

The cardiac rehab program places strong emphasis on helping you to understand what you can do to control heart disease. Click here for a schedule of classes.

Social Support

Many cardiac rehab clients form friendships with fellow participants. They enjoy getting together with other people who understand what is happening to them and how their lives are being changed by heart disease.

Risk Factors for Heart Disease

Breaking old habits and learning new ones can be stressful. Wondering about your future health can be stressful, too. Cardiac rehab can help you change or control some risk factors. There are some risk factors that you cannot change, such as older age or a family history of heart disease.

Risk Factors You Can Control
Smoking, high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol levels, sedentary lifestyles, overweight, diabetes, and stress.

The Cardiac Rehab Team
Cardiac rehab services can involve many health care providers, including: Cardiologist, Nurses, Exercise Specialists, and Dietitians. The most important member of your cardiac rehab team is you. No one else can make you exercise, quit smoking, or eat a more healthful diet.

To Be an Active Member of the Cardiac Rehab Team:
Learn about your heart condition and learn what you can do to protect your heart. Follow the treatment plan, feel free to ask questions, and report symptoms or problems.

How Do You Get Started?
Cardiac rehab often begins within a month after you have been discharged from the hospital. Once you complete the initial outpatient cardiac rehab program, you can maintain the habits of heart healthy living through the cardiovascular maintenance program.

Does Insurance Cover Cardiac Rehab?
Many insurance programs cover the initial outpatient cardiac rehab program. The cardiovascular maintenance program is not covered by insurance.

Do You Need a Physician's Order?
Yes, a physicians order is needed for both programs. If you do not have a physicians order, you may contact your doctor or one of the cardiac rehab staff can obtain the physicians order.

What Are the Days and Times of the Cardiac Rehab Programs?
Phase II sessions are held at 8 a.m., 9 a.m., 10 a.m., and 4 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. There are about 8 people in each class. Matters of the Heart Education Classes are offered before or after exercise depending on the time of your exercise class.

The Cardiovascular Maintenance Program groups are scheduled between 7:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, and between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursdays.

The cardiac rehab programs offered at the Heart Center are unique because they go beyond physical exercise. The program is structured on the recognition that controlling heart disease is a life-long, lifestyle issue. Our mission is to help people regain control over their lives when they often feel that heart disease is controlling them, and to give them the tools for a heart healthier life.

What's In It For You?
The goals of cardiac rehab are different for each participant. In helping set your personal goals, your health care team will look at your personal heart problems, your risks factors for future heart problems, your physician’s recommendations, and of course, your own preferences.

Make a habit of the heart healthy lifestyle you learn in cardiac rehab. Your life depends on it!

The cardiac rehab program at the Heart Center is certified by the AACVPR.
