Adenosine Cardiolite

This test is designed for those who are unable to walk on a treadmill. You will be lying on a cart throughout the test. A medicine called Adenosine will be given through an IV (intravenous) that is started prior to testing. The Adenosine makes your heart "think" that you're exercising. This medicine does not necessarily increase heart rate. Common side effects of the Adenosine are headache, nausea, a flushed (warm) feeling, heaviness in abdomen or chest and sometimes dizziness. The side effects are short lived and if too severe, easily relieved with Aminophylline (reversing medication). A small amount of Cardiolite, which is a radioactive material, will be injected through your IV before and during the stress test. This allows for a special camera to take pictures of your heart.
  • Expect to be at the hospital for approximately 3 to4 hours
  • Nothing to eat or drink 8 hours prior to testing
  • No caffeine for 24 hours prior to testing
  • No smoking
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing
  • Stop all Theophylline medications 36 to 48 hours before test
  • You must weigh less than 350 pounds
